Please stay tuned for details on the next application cycle.
DESCRIPTION:
Welcome to the Alice Écalle Memorial Scholarship for Mothers in Commercial Aviation. This scholarship was established in 2019 and will be awarded for the first time in 2020, ten years after Alice’s death, to honor her life and legacy as a mother and a pilot. It may be awarded annually to a driven, goal-oriented mother pursuing a career in commercial aviation. The scholarship will provide one award of up to $5,000 to be applied to flight training.
CRITERIA:
Assisting mothers in making their dream of becoming a commercial pilot a reality is the main goal of the scholarship committee. This scholarship seeks to identify mothers and pilots who best exemplify the spirit, courage, and persistence of Alice Écalle. Minimum requirements for consideration are:
Must be a mother
Must have CPL and IR
Copy written test results for CPL and IR
Pilot certificate and current medical certificate
Last three pages of logbook
Three recommendation letters, one of which must be from the flight instructor who oversaw your commercial and/or instrument rating
A personal statement on why you joined aviation and your plan for joining an airline (500 to 1,000 words)
An interview over the phone may be required
Applicant must submit proof of funds spent for flight training within one year of award
Funds will be paid directly to the recipient’s flight school or instructor and must be used within a year of scholarship award

SELECTION PROCESS:
A scholarship committee of Alice’s family and volunteers will review applicants who match the criteria for the award and may make the selection of one pilot. The committee reserves the right to rescind an award should a recipient’s circumstances change, such as the discontinuation of flight training or failure to submit accurate and truthful information in the application process. The committee reserves the right to withhold the award in the event that no nominees are deemed to meet the qualifications.
PAYMENT PROCESS:
The recipient will send the name, address, and work telephone number of their flight school or instructor for the scholarship committee to contact, verify, and request an invoice for flight training. Upon receipt of the invoice, the committee will issue scholarship checks payable to the flight school or instructor.
MANAGEMENT OF FUND:
The Alice Écalle Memorial Scholarship is administered by a scholarship committee of Alice’s family and volunteers. Currently the fund is not part of a 501(c)(3) as we navigate the early stages of its administration, but we are exploring the possibility of a fiscal sponsorship. No goods or services will be exchanged for contributions. The scholarship is funded by Alice’s friends, family, and the generous donations of individuals who believe in mothers pursuing their careers. Committee members of the Alice Écalle Memorial scholarship, or any member of their families, are ineligible to receive awards from the committee.
